Dear Incoming Fourth Grade Parents,

Avoid summer brain drain!

Educational research is clear that parents who are actively involved in their children’s education at home help their children become more successful learners in and out of school.

The University of Missouri researchers showed the biggest loss in learning occurs in math. The study showed that on average, students lost 2.6 months on a grade level equivalent in math computation over the summer.  The Frankford Township Board of Education and staff support Summer Math Practice for reinforcement and extension of the math concepts and skills that your child developed during the school year. We encourage you to work together with your child.

The attached packet contains a calendar, suggested activities, games, websites, and math literature selections for you and your child to make use of this summer. Please feel free to modify or add to any of the suggested calendar activities.

4th Grade Math Games

Playing with numbers through math games is a wonderful source for developing mathematical reasoning while practicing basic math facts.  Please enjoy these games with your children throughout the summer and beyond.

Memory Multiplication

Materials:        Deck of cards with multiplication problems to be learned

Deck of cards with answers to the multiplication problems

Play:

  1. On one side of the table turn the problem cards face down and mix them up.
  2. On the other side, turn the answer cards face down and mix them up.
  3. Player one starts the game and turns up a card in both piles.  If the answer matches the problem card, the player keeps the pair, if there is no match the cards get flipped faced down again and the play follows the same.
  4. The player who wins the most collected cards when they’re all gone wins the game.

Math UNO

Materials: deck of UNO cards (please just practice math skills if you do not have UNO cards)

Play:

  1. Use multiplication skills 1-9.
  2. Play the game exactly as the UNO rules say but when you have a play, you must tell what the total would be for the two numbers before you can play.
  3. For example: red 6 is showing you play a blue 6, 6x6 is 36 is your play, and so on.

Multiplication War

Materials:        deck of cards for each team of two players

Before you start, create the following key: Ace = 1, Jack = 0, Queen = 11, King = 12

Play:

  1. Pair up and shuffle cards
  2. Deal cards out evenly and stack face down in front of player
  3. Both players turn their top cards over at the same time.  They multiply the 2 cards and shout the answer.  The winner puts the cards in his/her winning pile.  If a tie occurs, keep turning cards until someone wins the pile.
  4. When all of the original stack has been played, count your cards – player with the most wins

Multiplication Buzz

Play:

This game is used to review a specific fact family.  The leader chooses the fact number between 1 and 9 then the leader begins counting with the number “1”, the next player says “2” and so on.  When they reach a multiple of the number chosen, the player says “Buzz” instead of the number.  If a player forgets to say “Buzz” or says it at the wrong time, he/she is out.  Play continues until the players reach the last multiple of the number times “9”.

Break My Eggs

Materials:        Egg cartons

Play:

  1. Write numbers in the bottom of the egg cartons.
  2. Put two manipulatives (coins, beads, beans, etc) in the egg carton.
  3. Close the lid and shake the carton.
  4. Open the carton and multiply the two numbers together.
  5. Play as teams and keep scores.

Multiplication Bingo

Materials:        Attached Bingo card – make copies for each player

Play:

  1. Chose any of the 25 numbers at the bottom of the card and write one in each square
  2. Randomly chose a multiplication fact (or use flashcards to chose fact)
  3. Say the problem out loud (six times six)
  4. If the product (answer) is on the card, mark the spot
  5. Continue play until someone gets bingo

Multiplication Bombardment

Materials:        Paper Plates, beanbags, flashcards

Play:

  1. Spread paper plates out on the floor
  2. Write multiplication facts on index cards or use flashcards and place upside-down ion plates
  3. Players throw beanbags or paper airplanes at plates, turn card over and say the product.  If correct, keep the card and it is replaced with a new card.  If wrong, turn card back over for another player to try to hit.
  4. Player with the most correct “hits” when the card are out - wins

Flip Up

Materials:        Deck of cards (remove jokers and face cards)

Play:

  1. Shuffle deck and deal out all cards face down
  2. Each player flips a cards form his/her pile
  3. The first player to call out the correct product (answer) gets to collect 2 flipped over cards. If a player calls out a wrong product, the other player gets the cards

List of games available in toy stores ($5 - $15)

Mastermind: A game of logic enjoyed by both children and adults. Look for a version of Mastermind for younger children ages 6 and up.

Dear Parents/Guardians of Frankford Township Incoming Fourth Graders,

The Frankford Township Board of Education and staff support a Summer Literacy Program. This program provides an opportunity for students to practice their reading and writing skills during the summer months.

Each incoming fourth grade student will be required to read one book, The Three and Many Wishes of Jason Reid . The book will be given to your child prior to the last day of school in June. Reading is meant to be a shared experience, so please feel free to read the book aloud with your child or allow him or her to read it on their own.

This assignment is mandatory. We ask that you please keep the book in a safe place during the summer months. Your child is to return the Reading Response Assignment (attached) and the book on the first day of school.

If you are interested in other good reading opportunities, we have also enclosed a list of suggested authors. There are many great stories written by these authors.
