Alcohol is the number one drug of choice among teenagers. In fact, 20% of the alcohol consumed in our country is done so by underage youth. A 2006 countywide survey of youth in grades 6 to 12 revealed alcohol abuse to be higher in Sussex County than the national average (see chart below). Tackling underage drinking requires a team approach. Please consider getting involved using the following ideas to reduce youth use of alcohol in Sussex County.

· Attend a workshop regarding underage drinking and binge drinking on Wednesday, May 7^th at 7 PM at the Lenape Valley Regional High School in Stanhope.

· Order FREE copies of “Start Talking Before They Start Drinking” or “Make a Difference- Talk to Your Child About Alcohol” booklets. (Email Jane at jane@centerforprevention.org or call her at 973.383.478. We can accommodate large orders!
· Visit our website (www.centerforprevention.org) to view the contest winners from April’s Alcohol Awareness Month public service announcement posters and essays and a new video to see what youth from around the county have to say.
· Learn more about our DEFY (Drug Education for Youth) youth group for 8^th to 12^th grade youth by calling Courtney at 973.383.4787. Share the newsletter with youth and encourage them to attend a meeting (the next meetings are April 9^th and May 7^th at 6 to 7:30 PM.)

The Coalition works hard to give community members current prevention information in an effort to reduce youth use of alcohol and other drugs. We appreciate your efforts to spread the message to parents that drinking is not a rite of passage. ~Becky Carlson
